What Do LVNs Do?

Generally, LVNs or licensed vocational nurses function under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). As delegated by their supervising RN, LVNs may provide nursing care to patients of all ages. Their duties also include the following:

  • Gathers data relevant to the patient’s need
  • Assists RNs in educating the patient and the patient’s family
  • Updates medical histories
  • Checks the vital signs of the patient
  • Assists patients in doing self-care tasks (e.g. Bathing, dressing and undressing, toileting, etc)
  • Updates doctors and RNs on the patients current status
  • Collects lab samples
  • Administer medications and IV drips
  • Monitor medication and patient response
  • Assists RNs and doctors with tests and procedures
  • Assembles and inserts catheters, tracheotomy tubes, and oxygen supplies.

What Are the Requirements?

For all interested applicants, you must comply with the following prerequisites:

  • Must be currently registered with California Board of Vocational Nursing
  • Must be certified to start IV therapies and administer medications
  • Current BLS and CPR Certification
  • Basic computer skills
  • Current, valid, and unrestricted license from the California Board of Vocational Nursing
  • Previous experience as an LVN in a hospital is desirable
  • Must present a calm and professional demeanor in any crisis
  • Must be able to respond appropriately to routine and emergencies
  • Must know how to set and revise priorities based on changes in the situation
  • Must continually attend in-service classes, staff meetings, education classes, and reading of current professional material
