What Do LVNs Do?
Generally, LVNs or licensed vocational nurses function under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). As delegated by their supervising RN, LVNs may provide nursing care to patients of all ages. Their duties also include the following:
- Gathers data relevant to the patient’s need
- Assists RNs in educating the patient and the patient’s family
- Updates medical histories
- Checks the vital signs of the patient
- Assists patients in doing self-care tasks (e.g. Bathing, dressing and undressing, toileting, etc)
- Updates doctors and RNs on the patients current status
- Collects lab samples
- Administer medications and IV drips
- Monitor medication and patient response
- Assists RNs and doctors with tests and procedures
- Assembles and inserts catheters, tracheotomy tubes, and oxygen supplies.
What Are the Requirements?
For all interested applicants, you must comply with the following prerequisites:
- Must be currently registered with California Board of Vocational Nursing
- Must be certified to start IV therapies and administer medications
- Current BLS and CPR Certification
- Basic computer skills
- Current, valid, and unrestricted license from the California Board of Vocational Nursing
- Previous experience as an LVN in a hospital is desirable
- Must present a calm and professional demeanor in any crisis
- Must be able to respond appropriately to routine and emergencies
- Must know how to set and revise priorities based on changes in the situation
- Must continually attend in-service classes, staff meetings, education classes, and reading of current professional material
