What Do PTs Do?

The main duty of a physical therapist is to control the pain and restore the mobility of a patient who suffered from any physical injury or illness. They help those people who lost their motor functions due to accidents, diseases, or age-related conditions. Other than that, PTs also perform the following:

  • Assess and evaluate the patient’s physical condition
  • Diagnose and manage movement dysfunctions
  • Develop and implement a treatment plan appropriate to the patient’s need
  • Review the patient’s medical history
  • Track progress and report to patient, patient’s caregiver/s, loved ones, facility staff, and healthcare professionals involved
  • Educate patients and their families about the recovery process and the challenges they will face.
  • Teach patients how to properly use therapeutic exercise techniques
  • Administers exercises and massages
  • Assist patients with the use of assistive devices, such as canes, crutches, walkers, and wheelchairs.
  • Advise patients and patient’s family about in-home treatment options and exercises

What Are the Requirements?

For all interested applicants, you must comply with the following prerequisites:

  • Doctor’s degree in Physical Therapy
  • National Physical Therapy Examination Passer
  • Licensed by the Physical Therapy Board of California
  • California Law Exam Passer
  • Completed a nine-month clinical practice period under the supervision of a California Board-licensed PT
  • Current state physical therapist license
  • BLS, CPR or CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification
  • Minimum of one year of physical therapy experience
  • Must be compassionate and empathetic to patients
  • Must be detail-oriented and resourceful
  • Must have great interpersonal skills and physical stamina
  • Must have the dexterity
