What Do PTs Do?
The main duty of a physical therapist is to control the pain and restore the mobility of a patient who suffered from any physical injury or illness. They help those people who lost their motor functions due to accidents, diseases, or age-related conditions. Other than that, PTs also perform the following:
- Assess and evaluate the patient’s physical condition
- Diagnose and manage movement dysfunctions
- Develop and implement a treatment plan appropriate to the patient’s need
- Review the patient’s medical history
- Track progress and report to patient, patient’s caregiver/s, loved ones, facility staff, and healthcare professionals involved
- Educate patients and their families about the recovery process and the challenges they will face.
- Teach patients how to properly use therapeutic exercise techniques
- Administers exercises and massages
- Assist patients with the use of assistive devices, such as canes, crutches, walkers, and wheelchairs.
- Advise patients and patient’s family about in-home treatment options and exercises
What Are the Requirements?
For all interested applicants, you must comply with the following prerequisites:
- Doctor’s degree in Physical Therapy
- National Physical Therapy Examination Passer
- Licensed by the Physical Therapy Board of California
- California Law Exam Passer
- Completed a nine-month clinical practice period under the supervision of a California Board-licensed PT
- Current state physical therapist license
- BLS, CPR or CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification
- Minimum of one year of physical therapy experience
- Must be compassionate and empathetic to patients
- Must be detail-oriented and resourceful
- Must have great interpersonal skills and physical stamina
- Must have the dexterity
