What Do STs Do?

The duties of a speech therapist are entirely about helping improve the speech, language, and voice of those who have speech impairments. STs perform the following:

  • Assess and evaluate the patient’s condition and needs
  • Determine the extent of the communication problem of the patient
  • Identify and develop treatment care plans
  • Carry out treatment plans
  • Teach patients how to make sounds and improve voices
  • Teach alternative communication methods
  • Coordinates with patients to improve their ability to read and write correctly
  • Abet patients to develop and strengthen the muscles used to swallow
  • Guide patients and families on how to cope with communication disorders
  • Perform administrative tasks

What Are the Requirements?

For all interested applicants, you must comply with the following prerequisites:

  • Master’s degree
  • Completed required clinical experiences
  • Must have current and valid Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP)
  • Completed graduate work course and a clinical practicum at a college or university whose program is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA)
  • Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers Board registered and licensed
